Would it be possible to ask the City Council to lower the fee's now that we are able to collect all fee's on customer who wish to use library services, and we are working toward a credit/debit collection service for all branches in order to collect those fees?
I had suggested that the library offer a few computers at each branch that would be for those who wish to spend more than an hour using the internet. That would work for people who are searching for jobs and submitting resumes and do not have the time or energy to drive to a different library for an extra hour or 2 of internet time, who have to take an exam that is over an hour in length in time, or people who just type really slow. But if there were computers available with an option of paying for extra time, I'm sure people who really needed to use it longer would pay.

Late fines for videos/DVDs should be lowered. A lot of families are getting hit too hard making the library less attractive. In these busy times just trying to find time to handle life's red tape priority items is hard enough. Children get excited about their card and then get ruined by the fines from just a couple of videos a day or two late.
I was thinking that maybe to offset the video we could do something like charge a dollar or two for extra Internet time.

Lots of great ideas in this article for SPIT to explore--see especially paragraph that mentions YOUmedia- http://youmediachicago.org Could we utilize some of the ideas Mayor Daley and Co. employed to create all those libraries? Could we start inviting clubs and organizations into the library for tours? Could we stop thinking of the library as a buidling with walls, floors, ceilings, books and the Internet and go out into the community to sell ourselves as an idea and a resource that is vital to the community's health? I know we do this anyway, but we need to think bigger and start reaching out to commerce and industry as well as schools and local government--it's worth exploring. We could discuss developing a speaker's bureau so that outreach doesn't have to be dependent on one person or department. Who needs help in our community that we are ideally suited to provide service to? Other than the obvious? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129832891&sc=nl&cc=totn-20100917
